The BIOS version has been updated to A14 -- this might be important for the suspend stuff to work properly. Also related BIOS settings are as follows: Power Management Mode = Customized Standby Time-out = disabled Suspend Time-out = disabled Suspend Mode = Suspend to RAM (this is probably irrelevant given the disabled entries above though). ------------------------------------ My 20 GB drive is setup as follows: Partition Size fdisk Id System /dev/hda1 512 MB a0 (that is a-zero) IBM Thinkpad Hibernation /dev/hda2 36 MB 83 Linux /dev/hda3 6.3 GB b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda4 12 GB f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda5 2.4 GB b Win95 FAT32 /dev/hda6 1.8 GB 83 Linux /dev/hda7 1 GB 82 Linux Swap /dev/hda8 6.5 GB 83 Linux Partition Usage: /dev/hda1 'formatted' for use as SUSPEND to DISK partition (this was done using the Windows phdisk.exe tool from Dell) /dev/hda2 ext2 /boot /dev/hda3 Win95 FAT32 C:\ drive /dev/hda5 Win95 FAT32 D:\ drive /dev/hda6 reiserfs / /dev/hda7 Linux Swap /dev/hda8 reiserfs /usr ------------------------------------ What I am running now for Linux: SuSE 7.2 Professional Edition with Kernel 2.4.7 APM version: APM BIOS 1.2 (kernel driver 1.14) KDE 2.1.2 xf86-4.0.3-35 (I think...) ------------------------------------ The ONLY PCMCIA cards that I have used under Linux are: 3Com 575 NIC Psion Modem (Global GSM and ISDN ready) ------------------------------------ I don't know how to record sound using the microphone, I couldn't find an app for that -- can you tell me what you were using and I will give it a try, I'm sure the app is there somewhere.... ------------------------------------ For PCMCIA network cards, you could try: cardctl eject cardctl insert For me, when I don't have my network cable setup during boot of Linux, I don't have an IP address (via DHCP) -- If I plug the cable in later and then by pretending to eject and insert the card via the software control, the DHCP is resolved. I haven't tried USB yet either as I have no USB devices. ------------------------------------ Suspend to RAM and Suspend to Disk (s2r and s2d) notes: I have no special scripts installed unless the SuSE installer did it automatically during the install; I have never had to worry about removing PCMCIA cards during a Linux install whatsoever, the cards are usually always inserted (sometimes in Windows, I remove the modem card and put in a Nokia GSM phone card that I use); ------------------------------------ HowTo use s2r and s2d: - note that s2r should not cause the machine to turn off completely, it is necessary to maintain some power to the machine through AC or battery means, that is the RAM must be continuously fed power to keep the state alive, everything else shuts down. On the other hand, s2d which takes quite a bit longer saves the state to the disk partition and then politely turns off completely. Both Win98SE and Linux - close lid, (does a s2r) -- when I open the lid, all comes back automatically and quickly. Win98SE only - press Fn-Esc (suspend) -- this is setup to s2d -- works fine, press power button to 'reboot' back to previous state; Linux only - press Fn-Esc -- this does s2r --resumes okay on key press; - press Fn-s -- this does s2r --resumes okay on key press; - press Fn-a -- this does s2d -- resumes okay on power on button press; - using apm tool: apm -s -- this does s2r, requires power button to resume; apm -S -- this also does s2r, but any key will resume; Note that the apm tool wasn't found as an ordinary user and that it was run as root under X in KDE. All other s2r and s2d methods work as any user. ------------------------------------ S99local - have you tried putting this in both the following places: /etc/init.d/rc3.d and /etc/init.d/rc5.d I always thought that to get to init level 5, you go through level 3, but it turns out with my current Linux, that is not how it works; it seems to go directly to the level 5 directory bypassing level 3 entries completely. ------------------------------------ Regards Andrew McGlashan 04 2574 1827 ----- Original Message ----- From: Didimo Grimaldo To: aem@bigpond.com Sent: Wednesday, 10 October 2001 7:31 AM Subject: Re: i7500 user Hi Andrew, Thanks for responding to my post, I was already VERY frustrated about having so many problems and getting all/most of my 7500 postings go totally ignored. The 7500 list was really great, I really miss it. I have a 7500 (Sept '99) with 128MB, recently upgraded my 6.4G drive to 20GB, use an external (PCMCIA scsi emulation) CDRW, use the PCMCIA card with EZ-Gig to mount my old drive. My current problems are: - When trying to record using the microphone it complains that another application is using it, but there is really no other app there. So far I can live with that. - My ethernet card no longer comes alive, it is REALLY hard to get it up in RH7.1 so it takes a lot of trials to connect to ADSL, whereas in Windows it works/connects right away - The S99local somehow doesn't execute, that's where I tried to set the kbdrate to something fast otherwise it is terribly slow. - Main problems yet is getting S2R & S2D working. I have the formatted S2D partition, but I would really prefer S2R. I noticed that if I close the lid (S2R) it doesn't quite turn off, but it never comes back to life again (hard reset needed). However it does the S2R ONLY if I first switch to a text console AND use "apm --suspend", then it comes back when I press the ON button, however pressing the lid switch kills the whole thing. - My Graphire USB tablet stopped working with XFree-4.0.3 even when configured. Only works in windows now. Anyway, I would really appreciate if you tell me what steps you followed to get S2R working, any special scripts (suspend/resume scripts?) or settings? anything special so that suspending from X11 works? Now with the upgraded HDD, I installed SuSE 7.2 professional (with everything off the single DVD media), set up the S2D and can do this Okay as well as S2R. Sound, networking and modem have never caused any problems. Also setup Oracle9i without problems and have the 2.4.7 SuSE Kernel. > >I am often astounded about how many responses come from the list from i8K and i8100 owners. > >Overall, I am mostly happy with my, now older, machine. And looking at the mail list postings, I think I will avoid another laptop purchase until at least another generation of machines, hopefully those again would have fewer or no problems to be concerned about. Sounds like I have been very lucky with my first laptop purchase and haven't been stung by the many problems others seem to be having, touch wood. > >Regards >AndrewM > >Andrew McGlashan >04 2574 1827 Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com -------------------------------------------------------------- Please post your X config files in the group links or database FAQ: http://www.whacked.net/ldl-faq Your use of Yahoo!
